I want to buy a car

Car insurance: What to do in the event of an accident?

The first thing is to remain calm, but after that? Here are a few rules to follow if you want to make it easier for your automobile insurer to process your claim.

If anyone is injured, call the police. If not, complete a joint report. If you have not already ordered one from the Groupement des assureurs automobiles, make sure both you and the other driver record the following information:

  • your names
  • addresses and telephone numbers
  • driver's licence numbers
  • vehicle information (make, model, licence number)
  • insurer information (name and insurance policy number)

Draw a sketch of the accident and record the date and place, as well as the damage to the vehicles. If there are any witnesses, take down their names and telephone numbers. Finally, both of you must sign the report.

Above all, do not admit responsibility. It is your insurance company that will determine wheter you are responsible, based on its investigation.

Contact your insurance company as quickly as possible. You must obtain its authorization before having your vehicle repaired.

Want to obtain a joint report form? It's free. Contact the Groupement des assureurs automobiles.
